DENVER, Colo. – HBU men's basketball heads for the Rocky Mountains to face Denver this Sunday afternoon in Hamilton Gymnasium for the first leg of a two-game road trip ahead of Thanksgiving, taking on the Pioneers at 3:00 p.m. CT. The Huskies (1-2) are led in scoring by a pair of sophomore guards,
Za-Ontay Boothman and
Brycen Long, who are each scoring 10.7 points per game. Long is averaging three made three-pointers per game. Senior
Darius Lee is adding 10.3 ppg and leads the team with 8.7 rebounds per game. On the offensive end, Lee's 3.67 offensive rebounds per game ranks 33
rd in the nation in that category.
As a team, HBU ranks 25
th nationally with 11 made threes per game and the team's .413 three-point percentage ranks 34
th. The Huskies are also out-rebounding opponents by 5.7 rpg, leading all Southland Conference teams.
Denver (2-3) was just in the Lone Star State for three games at the UTSA Invitational, going 1-2 over three days. The Pioneers defeated IUPUI 63-47 before falling to UTSA, 78-64, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 69-67.
The Pioneers are led by junior guard KJ Hunt who is averaging 18.4 ppg, shooting 51.5 percent from the floor and 41.2 percent from three and leading the team with 16 assists. Sophomore guard Jordan Johnson is second on the team with 10.2 ppg while junior Payton Moore, a transfer from Rice, leads the team with 5.2 rpg.
The Huskies and Pioneers have met twice previously with both games occurring during the 1978-79 season. Denver won both matchups in the home-and-home series, defeating the Huskies 84-66 in Denver and 79-67 in Houston.
HBU will fly to Oklahoma for the second leg of the road trip for a Wednesday, Nov. 24, evening tilt with the Oklahoma Sooners at 7:00 p.m. inside the Lloyd Noble Center.
