HOUSTON – HBU shattered the previous single-game school record for three-pointers on Saturday night with 22 buckets from behind the arc in the Huskies' home-opening 122-44 win over Barclay College in Sharp Gym.
HBU (1-1) put on a show, connecting on 22-of-38 (57.9 percent) from three-point range, besting the previous program record of 15 made threes set on Dec. 7, 2002 against Mountain State. The Huskies shot 57.7 percent (41-of-71) from the field and out-rebounded the Bears (1-4) by 35 (56-21). 17 of HBU's rebounds came on the offensive end and led to 20 second chance points.
Freshman forward
Tristan Moore went off in the second half with 26 points in just under 12 minutes of court time. Moore made his first five shots, all three-pointers in the span of six HBU possessions, and finished the night 6-of-8 from the three and 8-of-13 from the floor. He was also 4-of-5 from the foul line, had three rebounds, two blocked shots and a pair of a steals.
Brycen Long, a sophomore guard, was 5-of-7 from deep, 6-of-11 overall, for 17 points while junior
Khristion Courseault added 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting with a game-high seven assists. Other Huskies scoring in double-figures included
Sam Hofman, who was a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor and 3-of-3 from deep for 12 points,
Andre Charles Jr. who knocked down 3-of-4 from three, and
Za-Ontay Boothman who also hit three times from behind the arc. On the glass, Darius led the way with 13 rebounds while
Deshon Proctor pulled down 10.
The Huskies got out to an early 6-0 lead but Barclay fought back to within two, 8-6, just past four minutes into the game. The Huskies scored the next seven to go back up by nine, however. A Chazten Brown bucket at the 9:38 mark brought Barclay back to within six, 20-14, before HBU went on a 31-2 run to put the game away and build its lead the rest of the way.
HBU held the Bears to just 25 percent (15-of-60) shooting from the floor and 23.1 percent (6-of-26) from three. The Huskies also forced 23 turnovers and had 10 steals.
The Huskies' 78-point margin of victory is the third largest in program history. HBU defeated Dallas Christian by 79, 115-36, on Nov. 27, 1993 and defeated Crowley's Ridge by 80, 123-43, on Jan. 12, 2012.
HBU will be back on the road this coming Wednesday, Nov. 17, making the close trip to Bryan-College Station to face Texas A&M inside Reed Arena at 12:00 p.m.
