LAS VEGAS, NV – The HBU men's soccer team lost a WAC conference matchup against UNLV on a heartbreaking golden goal at Johann Memorial Field late Friday afternoon.
Â
The Huskies (2-9-0, 0-4-0) got on the board very quickly in the contest. In the third minute, after a great defensive stop by HBU on what looked like a promising UNLV (5-6-0, 1-3-0) attack,

Sebastian Cochrane who found a streaking
Nathan Karmbor near the top of the box. Karmbor was taken down by a Rebels defender leading to a Husky free kick. Cochrane lined up a few steps outside of the 18 yard box for the free kick, which he perfectly placed over the UNLV wall and into the top right corner to give the Huskies the lead, 1-0.
Â
The remainder of the first half was quiet for both teams. Cochrane put another shot on goal for the Huskies in the 36
th minute which was saved by Rebel goalkeeper Miguel Duenas Jr. Though aggressive offensively, the Rebels only managed to get two of their seven shots on goal in the half, both saved by
Ciro Calderon. The Huskies took their 1-0 lead into halftime.
Â
The second half was a story of near misses for both teams for the first half hour. The Huskies took seven shots, but none were on goal. The Rebels were able to get seven shots off, only one of which was on target.
Â
A foul in the 79
th minute against the Huskies set the Rebels up for a good look from 25-yards out. UNLV's Gabriel Claudio sent a ball into the box to find Aedon Kyra who tied the game at 1-1, where it would remain through the end of regulation.
Â
Five minutes into extra time, Marco Gonzales scored the golden goal for UNLV on a cross from Sam Wren, the end the game and take the win, 2-1.
Â
For the game, the Rebels led the Huskies in shots and shots on goal, 19(5)-9(3), and corners opportunities, 8-3. Huskies Calderon tallied three saves while Rebels Duenas Jr. had two. Cochrane sent all three shots on goal for the Huskies.
