HOUSTON – The HBU men's soccer team won their first Western Athletic Conference Match of the season Sunday afternoon when they beat Utah Valley 2-0.
Both teams were aggressive in the first half as HBU (3-12-0, 1-7-0 WAC) got off seven shots, two on goal, while Utah Valley (7-4-2, 4-3-0) got off six shots, three on goal. Neither team was able to capitalize on their opportunities in the first half and went into halftime tied at zero.
The Huskies came out aggressive on both side of the ball in the second half. Forcing turnovers in the Wolverines attacking third led to good Husky looks on goal. In the 48
th minute, the Huskies forced a turnover which led to
CJ Smith dribbling to the corner of the 18-yard box and sending a cross across the face of the goal where
Kaone Kolagano was able to connect and put it into the back of the net past a diving Wolverine keeper to open the Husky scoring, 1-0.
In the 60
th minute, off of a
JP Becerra save, the Huskies quickly went on the attack to score again. Smith once again found himself on the right side of the box sending in a cross that
Bryant Farkarlun was able to finish and make it 2-0 Huskies.
The Wolverines had several good looks in the last 20 minutes, but
JP Becerra was able to save all of their shot attempts. For the game, the Wolverines led the Huskies in total shots and shots on goal, 14(6) – 10(4) as well as corner kicks, 10-1. Wolverine goal keeper Joseph Wheelwright had two saves as HBU's Becerra had six and was able to keep his first clean sheet of the season.
The Huskies are back on the field next weekend as they travel northwest to take on Seattle U (9-7-0, 5-3-0 WAC) on Friday before heading to California to take on San Jose State (8-5-2, 6-1-1 WAC) on Sunday.
