HOUSTON – The HBU men's soccer team was on the wrong end of a 4-2 Western Athletic Conference match against the Cal Baptist Lancers at Sorrels Field on Friday night.
Cal Baptist (9-2-3, 4-1-2 WAC) dominated the first half scoring three times while holding the Huskies to just two shot attempts, one of which was on goal.
The Lancers got the scoring started quickly when Brian Gonzalez found Bryan Illiohan in the center of the box to get out to a 1-0 lead in the 4
th minute. In the 22
nd minute, Gonzalez found Luis Mueller on the right edge of the box who sent a bender past a diving Husky keeper to extend the lead to 2-0. In the 42
nd minute, Gonzales dribbled down the left sideline and sent a cross into the box that was touched by Jordan Lane and put into the back of the net by Emiel Deckoninck to extend the lead to 3-0. The Lancers would take their 3-0 into the half.
The Lancers weren't done there. On a corner kick in the 50
th minute, Danny Garcia sent a bender into the box which
Ciro Calderon gathered, but the assistant referee ruled the ball crossed the goal line and awarded a goal to CBU to extend the lead to 4-0.
The Huskies (2-12-0, 0-7-0 WAC) only shot on goal in the first half came in the 30
th minute when
Abu Kamara dribbled past two Lancer defenders and sent a shot on target which was saved by the CBU keeper.
The Huskies were more aggressive offensively in the second half, getting off seven shots, three of which were on goal. In the 77
th minute,
Sander Brauer-Ersoy was pulled down in the box by a Lancer defender and awarded a penalty kick. Husky midfielder
Sebastian Cochrane stepped up to the penalty spot and buried his attempt into the back of the net, making the score 4-1. Off of a Lancer turnover in the 89th minute,
Alex Serrano sent on Kaone Kolagone who found a streaking
Nathan Karmbor at the top of the box who sent a chip shot over the attacking Lancer goalkeeper to end the scoring for the game, 4-2.
For the game CBU led the Huskies in total shots and shots on goal, 13(6) – 9(4) and the teams were tied with three corner kick opportunities each. Husky goalkeeper Calderon and Lancer keeper Gage Rogers each had two saves in the game.
The Huskies return to Sorrels Field on Sunday when they host WAC opponent Utah Valley at 1 p.m.
