EDINBURG, TX – The HBU men's soccer team was on the wrong side of a 1-0 Western Athletic Conference match against UTRGV at the UTRGV Soccer Complex Friday night.
The HBU Huskies (2-11-0, 0-6-0 WAC) were held in check by the Vaquero defense for much of the match. The Huskies were only able to get three shots off for the game, one of which was on goal. The UTRGV Vaqueros (6-5-0, 3-2 WAC) were in control much of the contest. Offensively, they were able to get 17 shots off, only two of which were on goal.
The first half saw both teams display strong defensive work as neither team was able to get a shot on goal. The second half was a different story. On a 61st minute corner kick, UTRGV's Yusuf Cueceoglu found a streaking Javier Chavez in the box who put a shot past a diving Husky keeper to make the score, 1-0. The Huskies
CJ Smith nearly tied it late, with just 30 seconds left he sent a screamer towards the bottom left corner of goal, but the Vaquero's keeper used max effort to make the save and protect the lead.
For the game, the Vaqueros led the Huskies in shots and shots on goal, 17(2)-3(1) and corner kick opportunities, 7-2. Husky goalie
Ciro Calderon made one save in the contest, his 17th on the season.
Abu Kamara and
Bryant Farkarlun had the other two shot attempts for HBU.
The Huskies finally return home to Sorrels Field next weekend when they host California Baptist Friday night (10/22) and Utah Valley on Sunday (10/24).
