WSOC: HBU Draws With Lady Demons, 1-1

Sophomore Mia Salas scores her first career goal

NATCHITOCHES, La. – Playing on the road for the first time in nearly three weeks, the HBU women's soccer team played the Northwestern State Lady Demons to a 1-1 draw at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex on Friday evening.

It didn't take long for sophomore Mia Salas to get the Huskies (1-7-3, 1-2-2 SLC) on the board with a 1-0 lead. Salas had an attempt miss out high and right just a little more than a minute into the match but found the net in the 14th minute with assists from Ryan Ford and Katie Marker. HBU goalkeeper made a pair of saves in the 19th and 22nd minutes to keep the Huskies ahead by one. Late in the half, freshman Audrey Addison and senior Jessica Nevils both had shots on goal stopped by the Lady Demons (4-4-4, 4-1-1 SLC).

Ramirez was pressed into numerous saves as the second half wore on, making four stops before Northwestern State scored the equalizer in the 82nd minute thanks to Delaney Wells. NSU put one more shot on target before the end of regulation but Natalee Henry's shot was stopped by the Huskies with a team save. The Lady Demons put a pair of shots on goal in the first overtime but Ramirez came up with saves on both before the second overtime when the lone attempt on target of the 10 minutes came off the foot of HBU's Lauren Avila but was stopped in the 109th minute.

Salas's goal was the first of her career while Ford now has four assists on the season and Marker has three. In goal, Ramirez finished with eight saves in earning the tie, falling one save short of her career-high.

Northwestern State finished the match with 26 total shots and 10 on goal compared to the Huskies' 22 attempts with five on goal. The corner kick count was 9-6 in favor of the hosts.

HBU will be back home in Houston on Sunday, Oct. 3, to host UIW at 12 p.m. on the turf at The Emery/Weiner School due to concerns over field conditions at Sorrels Field resulting for the continued rains in the Houston area this week.
