MSOC: Aguilera Cubero Goal Not Enough as Huskies Fall to Lopes

Sunday's match to be played at the Emery Weiner School

HOUSTON – The HBU men's soccer team lost to 17th ranked Grand Canyon 3-1 in a WAC contest played at the Emery Weiner School Friday night.

The Lopes (7-1-0, 2-0-0) found the back of the net in the 18th minute when Justin Rasmussen played a ball into the box from the far side of the field where Shaun-Chris Joash was waiting for the score. The Lopes had several opportunities in the 31st minute to extend the lead when they managed four consecutive corner kicks. They were finally able to get a shot off, but Justin Rasmussen sent a bullet of the right post and out for a Husky goal kick. The Lopes went into the half leading 1-0.

The Huskies (2-7-0, 0-2-0) came out aggressive in the second half. An offside call against the Lopes just 50 seconds into the half sent the Huskies on the offensive. After playing the ball into the box, Bryant Farkarlun was able to knock the ball off a GCU defender who was trying to play keep-away, for a Husky corner. On the ensuing kick, Luis Poblacion connected with Diego Aguilera Cubero for a Husky goal to even the match, 1-1.

Not even one minute later, the Lopes turned the ball over in their defensive third leading to another Husky attack. CJ Smith sent a missile towards goal only for GCU's Anthony Munoz to make a full-extension save to keep Smith and the Huskies off the board.

The Lopes held possession and controlled the flow of the game for the remainder of the match, leading to two more scores. The 77th minute saw Kaden Cameron play a ball into the corner where Rey Gaytan connected with Alec LaBarge for the Lopes second goal on the night. Two minutes later, Tosh Yasuda scored from the top of the box to extend the lead to 3-1, where it would remain for the rest of the match.

For the game, the Lopes led the Huskies in shots and shots on goal 19(4) – 7(2) and corner kicks, 9-5. HBU's Ciro Calderon and GCU's Munoz each had one save on the night.

Due to inclement weather in the Houston area over the last week, the Huskies will once again return to the Emery Weiner School to host Air Force at 2:30 Sunday afternoon.
