BEAUMONT, Texas – The HBU men's basketball team opened Southland Conference play by splitting a pair of home games and the Huskies now hit the road for their next two beginning Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. with a visit to the Montagne Center to face the Lamar Cardinals. The Huskies (2-8, 1-1 SLC) head into Saturday's matchup having come up just short against Abilene Christian this past Wednesday. After trailing by as many as 16 in the second half HBU was able to fight back to take a lead and ultimately had possession with eight seconds to go down just three but ultimately fell, 66-63.
Junior
Pedro Castro has been strong for the Huskies, averaging a double-double in conference play through the first two games. Castro is averaging 16 points and 10.5 rebounds per game and is shooting 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from the floor and 71.4 percent (5-of-7) from beyond the arc. As a team this season, the Huskies have totaled 43 blocked shots for an average of 4.3 blocks per game after last season's team averaged just 2.2 bpg and totaled only 68 for the entire season.
Lamar (2-9, 0-2 SLC) opened the conference season with a pair of road games, first losing at ACU by 18 before Nicholls overcame a 10-point second half deficit to defeat the Cardinals by seven. Freshman Kasen Harrison has stepped up in the Cardinals' two SLC games, leading the team in conference play with 14 ppg, up from his 10.4 ppg season average.
For the season, junior Davion Buster is the team's leading scorer at 16.1 ppg and sophomore Anderson Kopp is second at 11.7 ppg. Between the two of them, they have attempted 133 of the team's 183 three-point attempts this year. As a team, the Cardinals are shooting just 25.1 percent from three. Avery Sullivan, a senior forward, leads LU with 7.6 rpg.
The Huskies are 6-8 against the Cardinals since joining the SLC and 9-15 all-time. LU has won the last four meetings with HBU's last win in the series coming Jan. 2, 2019.
HBU will have an off day in the schedule next Wednesday before returning to the hardwood next Saturday, Jan. 16, in Huntsville, Texas against Sam Houston State at 5:00 p.m.
