HOUSTON –HBU James Sears Bryant Head Men's Basketball Coach Ron Cottrell announced the signing of Pedro Castro to a National Letter of Intent to join the HBU program for the 2020-21 season on Thursday afternoon.

Pedro Castro – Fort Worth, Texas (Blinn College), 6-6, 185 lb., Guard

Castro, a 6-6 guard from Fort Worth, is a junior college transfer from nearby Blinn College where he played his sophomore season under head coach Scott Schumacher. During the 2019-20 season he started 30 of the Buccaneers' 33 games, averaging 10.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. As a sophomore, he shot 39.1 percent from behind the arc and connected on 49.5 percent from the floor. Additionally, Castro led the team with 3.6 assists per game while also adding 1.5 blocks and one steal per game. As a freshman at UT Arlington, he appeared in 33 games while starting three. He averaged 2.6 points and 2.1 rebounds per outing, scoring eight points three times.

Castro on HBU:

"I first want to thank God for all his grace and blessings. I want to thank my family and friends for their love and support; Coach Porostovsky for already being there for me on and off the court; Coach Young for everything he's done for me and for introducing me to Coach Schumacher; Coach Schumacher for bringing me in and giving me the opportunity to be successful; Coach Sheilds and Coach Schwartz for all the behind the scenes work they do; my Blinn teammates for the ride and all the memories; and Coach Cottrell and the HBU staff for the opportunity and faith they have in me. I chose HBU because the coaching staff was great and I felt like it gave me the best opportunity to achieve my goals."

Cottrell on Castro:

"Pedro Castro is a long wing player who can play multiple positions for us. Pedro started his career at UT Arlington where he played considerable minutes as a redshirt freshman on a team that finished second in the Sun Belt. And, he had a stellar season at Blinn this past year where he received all-region honors. Pedro uses his length and high basketball IQ to shoot the three-pointer at a high percentage and to rebound over smaller guards and wings. Because of Pedro's previous experience at the NCAA D-I and highly respected east Texas junior college level, we expect Pedro to make an immediate impact on the court for us. We are more than excited to have him join us at HBU."

Cottrell on 2020-21 recruiting class:

"These young men collectively bring us experience, versatility and athleticism. But more importantly, they are all products of winning programs who value competing and team success above all else. This group of guys (including early signee, Brycen Long) will come to HBU ready to compete at the highest level every day they step on the floor. We are thrilled to add these young men to our returning squad. We are very confident that this team will work hard to represent HBU in a first-class manner and compete for a Southland championship."
