HOUSTON – After a two-game homestand, the HBU men's basketball team will remain in the Bayou City for its next matchup with a return game against the Rice Owls in Tudor Fieldhouse on Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. The game will be shown on CUSATV, available through Riceowls.com while Husky fans can listen in on the Husky Sports Network with Lonnie King providing play-by-play available at HBUHuskies.com.
HBU (1-4) picked up its first win of the season last time out, downing Champion Christian, 93-60, behind a career-high 23 points from freshman
Za-Ontay Boothman who shot a blistering 75 percent (6-of-8) from three-point range in his first career start. Junior
Pedro Castro added 18 points and a team-high seven rebounds while senior
Philip McKenzie finished with 14 points and five boards. The Huskies shot 61.9 percent (13-of-21) from three, knocking down 9-of-11 in the first half.
The Huskies currently ranked third among Southland Conference teams in three-point percentage, connecting on 39.8 percent (45-of-113) from long-range. Overall, HBU is shooting 43.4 percent (126-of-290) from the floor. Among players in the SLC meeting the minimum attempts per game qualification, Boothman ranks sixth in three-point field goal percentage, shooting 44.4 percent through five games. Castro, averaging 6.4 rebounds per game, checks in at ninth in the league in rebounding.
When the Huskies and Owls (4-1) met in Sharp Gym on Dec. 5, Rice used a 20-3 run in the first half to gain a comfortable lead and keep HBU at bay the rest of the way, winning 86-64. The Huskies shot 50 percent from the floor in the loss but committed 23 turnovers and managed to make just 25 percent from three. Boothman led the Huskies with 15 points off the bench while Zack Iyeyemi set new career-highs of 12 points and six rebounds. Rice was led by a career-high 27 points from Quincy Olivari.
The Owls hosted New Mexico on Sunday, falling to the Lobos by a score of 72-61. Rice was out-rebounded 49-30 in the loss, shooting 33.9 percent (19-of-56) from the field and 37.1 percent (13-of-35) from behind the arc. Olivari led the team with 21 points. Olivari leads the Owls with 15.6 ppg while Travis Evee is adding 13.6. Max Fiedler leads the way on the boards, averaging 8.8 rpg.
The Huskies have a busy week, hitting the road for a two-game road trip that begins with a game at North Texas in Denton, Texas on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. before continuing north to Norman, Okla. for a date with the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
