HOUSTON – HBU men's basketball remains in Houston for a home matchup inside Sharp Gym against Champion Christian on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Husky Sports Network with Lonnie King providing play-by-play available at HBUHuskies.com.
In the Huskies' (0-4) last game, a loss to Rice, a pair of freshmen set new career-highs off the bench as
Za-Ontay Boothman led the team with 15 points in 24 minutes off the bench while
Brycen Long added eight points along with three assists in 13 minutes. Sophomore post
Zach Iyeyemi set new career-bests in scoring and rebounding for the second-straight game, finishing with 12 points and six rebounds.
The Huskies are averaging 65.3 points per game while shooting 39.7 percent from the floor and 34.8 percent from three-point range. Senior
Ty Dalton continues to lead the team in scoring, averaging 10.3 points per game while junior
Pedro Castro leads the way on the boards, pulling down 6.3 rebounds per game. Iyeyemi is currently shooting 62.5 percent (10-of-16) from the field for the top mark on the team.
Champion Christian (1-0), a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association, comes into Friday's matchup having beaten Bacone College and dropping an exhibition matchup at LSU-Shreveport. In the Tigers' 94-73 win over Bacone on Oct. 30, sophomore Ariyon Williams led the team with 32 points on 12-of-17 shooting which included a 5-of-9 mark from beyond the arc. Braylon Hawkins, a 6-3 forward, posted a double-double in the win of 17 points and 18 rebounds.
The Tigers' only other game so far this season came more than a month ago when they fell to LSU-Shreveport, 110-62, on Nov. 10. In that loss, Champion Christian shot 35.8 percent from the floor and committed 26 turnovers. Hawkins and Williams again led the team on the offensive end with Hawkins finishing with 18 points while Williams added 15.
Friday marks the first meeting between the two programs.
HBU will stay in the city Houston for its next matchup before embarking on a two-game road trip, heading across town for a return matchup with Rice on Tuesday, Dec. 15, at 2:00 p.m. before heading to Denton, Texas to face North Texas on Dec. 17 and Norman, Okla. to take on the Oklahoma Sooners on Dec. 19.
