INDIANAPOLIS – HBU recorded an 89% overall Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and a 68% Federal Graduation Rate (FGR), both of which led the Southland Conference, as the NCAA released its annual report this week.
HBU's GSR ranked third in the state of Texas, behind only Baylor and Rice, which both recorded 94%. The Huskies' FGR also ranked third, behind Rice (84) and Baylor (73). Among the rest of the Southland, McNeese ranked second to HBU at 85% in GSR and tied with Nicholls for second with a 62% FGR.
This year's report measures the freshmen who initially enrolled at their institutions in 2013. HBU's Football program was included in HBU's report for the first time and recorded a 100% graduation success rate. Four other programs also achieved a 100% success rate: Men's and Women's Golf, Women's Soccer and Women's Cross Country/Track & Field.
Softball (94), Women's Basketball (93), Men's Cross Country/Track & Field (87) and Baseball (84) each scored above 80%.
The GSR measures the graduation success of all scholarship student-athletes over a six-year period and takes into account transfers in and out of the university, not penalizing institutions for student-athletes who transfer out in good academic standing. The FGR is a federally mandated calculation for all schools that offer athletic scholarships, which counts transfers as academic failures, essentially measuring only the percentage of student-athletes who receive a bachelor's degree from their initial school.
