Jake Wonders Promoted to Associate AD

Wonders oversees HBU compliance and academics

HOUSTON – HBU has promoted Jake Wonders to Associate Athletic Director for Compliance and Academics, Director of Athletics Steve Moniaci announced Wednesday.

"Jake not only has a tremendous responsibility for the academic well-being of our 350 student-athletes, but also to monitor NCAA legislation affecting our 17 sports," Moniaci said. "Our APR (Academic Progress Rate) has been outstanding under his leadership and has become the standard in the Southland Conference. I know the coaches, who rely on him heavily for rules interpretations, recruiting and eligibility questions, and countless other words of advice, will join me in applauding Jake's efforts and this well-deserved recognition."

Wonders previously served as Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and Academics for the last two years in his third stint with the University. He was previously the Director of Academics from 2013-17, before spending a year in academic services at Texas A&M, and was an assistant basketball coach at HBU from 2003-06.

In HBU's first four years as a member of the Southland Conference, Wonders was instrumental, as the Huskies' number of academic all-conference selections increased each year. He also helped garner 13 CoSIDA Academic-All-District honors, with volleyball's Allison Doerpinghaus and men's soccer's Bryan Brody achieving the department's first CoSIDA Academic All-American accolades as members of the Southland in 2015.

Since returning to HBU, four more student-athletes have earned CoSIDA Academic All-American honors. Additionally, HBU won its fourth-straight Southland Conference Academic Award and second-straight FCS ADA Academic Progress Rate Award in 2019. During the 2019-20 academic year, 225 student-athletes were named to the Southland Conference Academic Honor Roll and two student-athletes were named the Student-Athlete of the Year in their respective sports.
