HOUSTON - HBU hosts Northwestern State in the Southland Conference opener Saturday at 6:05 p.m. at Husky Stadium. The game will be shown live on ESPN3 and the Husky Sports Network audio broadcast will be available on KMME Digital Radio and HBUHuskies.com.
 
The Huskies (2-1) have won back-to-back games after last week's thrilling 53-52 road victory over South Dakota. Junior quarterback Bailey Zappe ranks second in the nation with a 75.2 completion percentage (85-of-113), second with 1,062 passing yards and is tied for third with 10 touchdowns. Junior receiver Ben Ratzlaff ranks sixth in the nation with 9.0 receptions per game, fourth with 353 receiving yards and fifth with four touchdowns, while sophomore Jerreth Sterns ranks seventh with 8.0 receptions per game. Junior running back Dreshawn Minnieweather has rushed for 201 yards and three touchdowns and also has a receiving TD.
 
Senior defensive end Andre Walker leads all levels of NCAA Football with 7.5 sacks and 52 yards lost after his four-sack performance against USD. .Junior linebacker Caleb Johnson ranks eighth in the nation with 11.3 tackles per game, has an interception return for a TD and two fumble recoveries. Freshman safety Tra Fluellen made a season-high 15 tackles against the Coyotes and leads HBU with a pair of interceptions, including the game-sealer against USD.
 
The kicking game has been solid for the Huskies, with junior punter Blake Patterson averaging 42.4 yards, while freshman kicker Gino Garcia is 4-for-5 on field goal attempts and 15-for-17 on extra points. Senior kickoff return Gamar Girdy Brito was the STATS FCS National Special Team Player of the Week last week with the most all-purpose yards (352) in a single-game this season and is averaging 35.6 yards per return.
 
Shelton Eppler is 92-for-142 for 789 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions and is the second-leading rusher with 58 net yards for the Demons (0-3). Quan Shorts has 28 receptions for 237 yards and three touchdowns, while Akile Davis has added 11 catches for 119 yards. Jared West leads NSU with 62 rushing yards and a touchdown.
 
Adri Robertson has 18 tackles and a sack and Ryan Reed has 17 tackles. Jomard Valsin has a sack and an interception, while Dylan Wilson has the other pick for the Demons.
 
NSU leads the all-time series against HBU, 2-0, after last year's 31-28 win in Natchitoches.
 
The Huskies host Texas Southern in an intra-city non-conference matchup next Saturday at 6 p.m. at Husky Stadium.
