WSOC: Four-Match Road Stretch Opens at North Texas and Texas State

The Huskies opened the season with a 5-0 win over Prairie View A&M

DENTON, Texas – After opening the season with a shutout win at home the HBU women's soccer team opens a stretch of four matches away from Sorrels Field this Friday with matchups versus North Texas and Texas State slated for this coming weekend.

HBU (1-0-0) takes on the Mean Green (2-0-0) on Friday, Aug. 30, evening at 7:00 p.m. at the UNT Soccer and Track & Field Stadium. Then, on Sunday, Sept. 1, the Huskies will be in San Marcos, Texas to face the Bobcats (2-0-0) at the Bobcat Soccer Complex with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.

HBU's Avery Cortez earned Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors for the opening weekend after recording the program's first hat trick since 2008, netting three goals against Prairie View A&M to go along with an assist for seven points. Megan Rickert earned the SLC Defensive Player of the Week selection for her role in the Huskies' shutout of the Lady Panthers, limiting the opponent to just seven shot attempts in the match.

North Texas comes into the match boasting a pair of shutout victories over Northwestern State and Texas Southern in which the Mean Green has out-scored opponents 12-0 and has yet to allow a single shot attempt. Junior Berklee Peters leads the Mean Green with three goals through the first two matches while Logan Bruffett and Taylor Hunter each have two. Last season, North Texas earned a 2-0 win over the Huskies at Sorrels Field.

Texas State has also earned a pair of shutout wins to open the year, downing Incarnate Word 1-0 before beating Prairie View 1-0, both at home. The Bobcats' two goals have come from senior Genesis Turman and freshman Bailey Peschel. A pair of goalkeepers have split time in goal with senior Heather Martin earning both starts, combining for four saves. The Huskies and Bobcats were scheduled to play last season but the match was cancelled due to poor weather. The last time the two teams met was in 2012 resulting in a 1-1 draw at Sorrels Field.

The Huskies will remain on the road the following weekend with a visit to the Empire State for matches at Buffalo and Niagara.
