CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – HBU dropped its regular season finale, 76-69, to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday evening at the American Bank Center but clinched a spot in the Southland Conference tournament after other results around the league and will be the no. 8 seed.
Sophomore
Ian DuBose scored the first four points of the game to give the Huskies (12-17, 8-10 SLC) an early lead before Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (14-17, 9-9 SLC) answered with the next four to even it up. The game remained close until a little run capped by a long three-pointer from
Jalon Gates put HBU ahead 21-13 with 10:31 to go in the half.
Less than two minutes later,
Benjamin Uloko made a layup and
Oliver Lynch-Daniels drained a three to give the Huskies a 26-16 advantage. From there, the Islanders began slowly working their way back and using a 6-0 run late to tie the score at 36-36 before
Jackson Stent hit a turnaround jumper with 1:00 on the clock which turned out to be the last points of the half and gave HBU a 38-36 lead at halftime.
In the second half, a
Ty Dalton free throw and
Edward Hardt layup gave the Huskies a 41-37 lead before an 11-3 Islanders run gave TAMUCC a four-point lead. TAMUCC pushed that lead to seven, 57-50, after a Jake Babic three with 8:10 remaining. The Huskies fought their way back to within one, 61-60, with just 4:58 left on the clock but went cold from the floor while the Islanders scored the next eight points with DuBose knocking down a pair of threes in the final minute but the closest HBU got was four.
DuBose led all players with 28 points, connecting on 5-of-10 from beyond the arc and 9-of-21 from the floor, while adding seven rebounds, three steals and three assists. Dalton added nine for the Huskies while Hardt had eight.
