ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – HBU men's basketball will bring its tough non-conference schedule to a close this Sunday in Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit with an afternoon matchup against the New Mexico Lobos at 12:30 p.m. MST. HBU (0-9) comes into its ninth and final on-conference game of the season having played the third most difficult schedule in the country according to ESPN.com's strength of schedule rankings. Based on the NCAA's NET rankings, the Huskies have played five games against quadrant one opponents with New Mexico set to be their sixth such opponent.
Senior
Jackson Stent has been the team's most efficient shooter to this point in the season with a .594 shooting percentage (19-of-32) from the floor. Over his last five games he has been even better, connecting on 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the field. Freshman
Noah Thomasson made the most of his 12 minutes off the bench in HBU's loss at SFA, scoring a career-high 10 points and recording a pair of steals.
New Mexico (11-2) is led by senior JaQuan Lyle who began his career at Ohio State. Lyle is currently 75
th in the nation in scoring with 17.8 points per game and is shooting 43.5 percent (27-of-62) from three. Lyle has also been one of the best in the nation at getting to the foul line with 81 free throw attempts, the fifth-most in the country. Carlton Bragg, the Lobos' second-leading scorer who started his career at Kansas, is averaging a double-double of 13.5 ppg and 10.8 rebounds per game.
The Huskies and Lobos have met three times before with the last coming early in the 2016-17 season. New Mexico won that game 95-79 with senior
Jalon Gates the lone player on the Huskies' current roster to play in that game. Gates finished with 10 points, knocking down 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.
The Huskies will have a week and a half before their next game, hosting Central Arkansas on Thursday, Jan. 2, at 7:00 p.m. inside Sharp Gym.
