WBB: Huskies Host LSU Shreveport in Season Opener
HOUSTON, TX- HBU Women's Basketball is set to open their season up this Tuesday night as they host LSU Shreveport in Sharp Gym to tip the season off.Â
The Huskies are returning eight players from a team that finished with a 9-19 record despite multiple injuries throughout the season. HBU is welcoming six newcomers to the 2019-20 squad including a trio of freshmen from Mansfield Timberview high school
Kennedy Wilson,
Timia Jefferson, and
N'Denasija Collins. The Huskies will also be bringing in three international players with the addition of
Abbey Sutherland, Asta Grimsdottir, and
Patience Idoko. These new additions add to an experienced HBU roster that boasts seven upperclassmen. The Huskies will be led by
Megan Valdez-Crader and
Lauren Calver who return as two of the Huskies top four scorers averaging 10.4 and 6.7 points a game respectively. HBU will have to fill the void left by their leading scorer
Amanda Johnson (13.5 ppg) due to graduation. They will look for the emergence of two sophomores in
Julija Vujakovic and
Marilyn Nzoiwu who are sure to take a bigger role in the offense this season.Â
LSUS comes into the game with a 1-0 record as they faced off with Southern University at New Orleans and the Pilots took the victory by a score of 84-65. LSUS was led by Fu'tra Banks who led all scorers with 22 points adding 10 rebounds to record a double-double.  DeAuja Thompson also added a double-double performance posting 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Tip off is slated for 7:00 P.M. in Sharp Gym on Pediatric Cancer Night with the game being streamed on the Husky Sports Network.Â
