The Huskies were flagged only one time for 10 yards, while the Lions were penalized six times for 77 yards.

SLU scored on the first play from scrimmage, using a flea-flicker from Virgil to Nunez for an 80-yard touchdown.

After HBU's first drive stalled, the Huskies got the ball back on Johnson's seventh career fumble recovery. HBU settled for a 43-yard field goal by Garcia, then he made another from 31 yards out to cut the Lions' lead to 7-6.

Taron Jones capped an 11-play, 75-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run as SLU took a 14-6 lead with 2:32 left in the first.

HBU senior defensive end Andre Walker sacked Cole Kelley and forced a fumble, which sophomore defensive tackle John Goree scooped up and returned 11 yards to the SLU 10, but on the ensuing possession, Zappe was picked off and Jordan went the distance for a touchdown as the Lions led 21-6 with 4:18 remaining in the half.

Beek had back-to-back big plays, with a 25-yard reception and a 15-yard run to set up Sterns' touchdown run for the Huskies, but the Lions responded with Virgil finding Turner for a 15-yard touchdown with 39 seconds left to send SLU to halftime with a 28-13 lead.
