WBB: HBU Drops to McNeese on the Road
LAKE CHARLES, La.- HBU women's basketball fell to McNeese in a hard fought game this Saturday afternoon in Lake Charles 81-71. The Huskies once again showed their depth with 26 points coming from the bench, but were unable to slow down the McNeese attack in the loss.
HBU (6-11,1-6 SLC) tried to mount another fourth quarter comeback behind the strong scoring performances from
Amanda Johnson and
Megan Valdez-Crader, but fell short. Johnson posted 26 points on the afternoon including 6-10 from three-point range, while Valdez-Crader scored 17 points with eight rebounds and eight assists.
Shannon Jones and
Natalia Gwarda also put in solid performances with Jones grabbing eight rebounds to go with seven points. Gwarda was able to do a little bit of everything as she scored eight points, grabbed six rebounds, had three assists, two blocks, and two steals in the game.
McNeese (5-13,3-4 SLC) were led by the play of Callie Maddox who had 23 points on 67 percent shooting as well as six rebounds and three assists. Maddox was also able to convert 9-10 from the free-throw line. Damilola Balogun recorded a double-double in the win with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Divine Tanks and Regan Bolton were able to contribute 12 and 14 points respectfully.
The first quarter started slow for both teams, but once the shots started to drop both teams found their groove. For the Huskies it was all
Amanda Johnson and
Kennedy Collins as they scored all 15 first quarter points.
The second quarter was slow to get started as well until about the five minute mark when
Takara Wade knocked down a mid range jumper. The Huskies were able to cut the lead down to five before the Cowgirls finished the half on a 11-4 run to take a 41-29 lead into half. The second half McNeese got off to a quick start before the Huskies settled in and made 8-10 of their free-throw attempts. HBU continued their trend of strong fourth quarters scoring 25 points the most scored in a quarter by any team, but it was not enough as the Huskies fell 81-71 Saturday afternoon in Lake Charles, La.
HBU will return home this week to take on Incarnate Word Jan. 30th and Texas A&M Corpus Christi Feb. 2nd before a short road trip to take on Stephen F. Austin Feb. 6th
