HOUSTON – In a match that saw HBU put its first shot on goal in the 90
th minute, it was the Huskies who grinded out the 1-0 win over visiting Saint Francis (Pa.) thanks to a header by sophomore
Jordi Cobo off a
Josue Palomino corner kick with 2:51 left in the first overtime in men's soccer action at Sorrels Field on Sunday night.
Sunday's game was a defensive battle with both teams combining to put just five shots on goal while attempting 15. Saint Francis (1-1-0) found its chances early with a shot on target in the ninth minute that was stopped by HBU (1-0-1) keeper
Jorge Cabrera. The most dangerous attempt of the game for the Red Flash came less than six minutes later when SFU's Mario Mastrangelo had a header on target coming off a corner kick that was cleared out by a Husky defender. The third and final shot on goal of the game for the Red Flash came at the 24:41 mark from well outside the 18-yard box and easily saved by Cabrera.
In the second half, HBU started to find its chances after its only attempt in the first period was blocked by the SFU back line. The Huskies' looks started to come in the final 11 minutes of regulation with a
Dominick Faletto header missing just over the cross bar at the 79:33 mark. A
Gianluca Natera shot with just 15 seconds to go flew wide and a Palomino corner led to a header just ahead of the buzzer from
Malik Key that was on target and stopped by the SFU defense.
The first overtime wore on with both teams winning corners in the first four minutes but neither team getting a shot off. HBU's second corner of the OT came with less than three minutes remaining and Palomino's ball fell right to Cobo in front of the goal and his header snuck past the keeper to his right for the win.
The goal was Cobo's first of the young season and the assist was Palomino's first, as well. Natera led HBU with three shot attempts. Cabrera and the HBU defense kept a clean sheet with Cabrera recording a pair of saves in earning the win.
The Huskies travel to Edinburg, Texas next weekend for the UTRGV Invitational and will take on Northern Illinois on Friday, Aug. 31, and Purdue Fort Wayne on Sunday, Sep. 2.
