VB: HBU Records Pair of Sweeps on Opening Day

Huskies handle Prairie View A&M, La Tech in straight sets



HOUSTON – HBU opened the season with a sweep of Prairie View A&M, 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-13), then held off Louisiana Tech to sweep the nightcap as well, 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 26-24), in the Barcelona Sporting Goods HBU Classic Friday at Sharp Gym.
 
Against PVAMU, sophomore outside hitter Mikayla Vivens recorded her first career double-double with career-highs of 11 kills and 10 digs, while adding three aces for HBU (2-0). Redshirt freshman outside hitter Kelly Colwell had nine kills and six digs, sophomore middle blocker Megan Patillo hit .389 with eight kills and three blocks and sophomore right side Ashtyn Richey added six kills. Senior setter Madison O'Brien posted 29 assists, nine digs, three kills and three blocks and junior libero Hannah Lewis matched Vivens for the match high with 10 digs. Senior middle blocker Kayla Davenport had five kills with no errors and a pair of blocks.
 
Jaylan Thomas led PVAMU with seven kills and seven digs, while Tamaira Armstrong had six kills. Kayla Long led the Lady Panthers with 10 digs and Christen Augustine had eight.
 
HBU hit .298 for the match, while holding PVAMU to an .023 attack percentage. The Huskies outblocked the Lady Panthers, 5-1, and outdug them, 44-36.
 
In the sweep of Louisiana Tech, Vivens once again led the Huskies with 12 kills and seven digs, while Patillo hit .571 with nine kills. Colwell added eight kills and seven digs, Davenport had six kills with no errors and Richey recorded five kills. O'Brien dished out 31 assists to go along with four kills and eight digs and Lewis was outstanding defensively with 19 digs.
 
Carter Mirich had six kills for the Lady Techsters, while Lara Hendricks and Madeline Davis had four apiece. Abigail Hildenbrand had 12 assists and Morgan Currie had nine digs.
 
The Huskies hit .274 and held both opponents under .100 hitting for the day, with the Lady Techsters attacking at an .084 clip. HBU outdug Louisiana Tech, 54-41 and aced them 11 times.
