BEAUMONT, Texas – HBU women's basketball falls to Southland Conference leader Lamar Wednesday night at Montagne Center.
The Huskies (8-17, 4-11 SLC) were led by three players in double-digits. Junior center
Veronika Kirienko shot 45.5 percent from the field with 11 points and 11 rebounds, recording her third double-double of the season, while sophomore guard
Shannon Jones recorded her first double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 boards. Sophomore guard
Sophie Taylor contributed 12 points, five steals and four rebounds. Freshman
Megan Valdez-Crader drained seven points, pulled down eight boards and had two assists.
Lamar had three powerful shooters led by De'Angela Mathis, who shot 51.9 percent from the floor and 3-of-7 from the 3-point range. She scored 35 points in 31 minutes with four rebounds and four steals. Moe Kinard put up 21 points and had five steals, while Chastadie Barrs recorded a triple-double with 16 points, 10 assists and 10 steals.
HBU shot 40.4 percent, went 3-of-8 from the 3-point range and 10-of-18 from behind the line. Lamar shot 45.0 percent from the field, went 7-of-25 from beyond the arc and 11-of-14 from the free-throw line. HBU outrebounded Lamar 49-32. The Huskies also outscored the Cardinals 38-9 off the bench.
The Huskies face McNeese for their final road series Saturday, Feb. 24 at 1 p.m. They will return home for the final week of season play to host Incarnate Word Wednesday, Feb. 28 and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday, March 3 at 2 p.m.
