THIBODAUX, Louisiana – Despite sophomore guard
Lauren Calver's first career double-double performance, HBU women's basketball lost to Nicholls in Southland Conference women's basketball Saturday afternoon at Stopher Gymnasium.
Calver shot 40.0 percent from the floor, leading the Huskies (6-16, 2-10 SLC) with 12 points and 11 boards. Junior guard
Amanda Johnson contributed 10 points and four rebounds, while sophomore guard
Sophie Taylor added eight points. Junior center Veronkia Kirienko scored six points and pulled down seven rebounds. Freshman guard
Megan Valdez-Crader helped the Huskies in bringing down six rebounds.
Four Colonels (11-12, 6-6 SLC) scored in double figures, including a double-double effort from Cassidy Barrios. She shot 45.5 percent from the field and went 10-of-10 from the stripe, draining 21 points, 10 rebounds, had four assists, four blocks and four steals. Tykeria Williams put up 13 points, had four boards and three steals. Tia Charles scored 11 points, handed out four assist and had three steals, while Marina Lilly added 10 points and seven rebounds.
HBU shot 27.4 percent from the floor, went 1-of-15 from the 3-point range and 10-of-15 from the free-throw line. Nicholls shot 36.6 percent, went 3-of-18 from behind the arc and 16-of-16 from behind the line. The Huskies outrebounded the Colonels, 47-35, but the Colonels outshot the Huskies in the paint, 34-28.

Sydney Carr sparked a six-point run for the Huskies to start the first quarter. The Colonels responded with next six that ended with a layup from Taylor. Barrios was sent to the line to make the score even, 8-8, going into the second quarter. After a 6-6 run highlighted by four points from Taylor, the Colonels pulled away thanks to an 8-0 run. Calver was able to end the run, but Barrios hit a shot from behind the arc to end the half, 25-16.
Early in the third quarter the Nicholls claimed 14 out of the first 19 points. Johnson and Kirienko answered back with back-to-back buckets for HBU with Taylor helping out from behind line, scoring the next eight of 10 points. A 3-pointer by Tykeria Williams began a 9-2 run to give the Colonels a 19-point advantage at the start of the fourth quarter. The Huskies were down 57-37 with 4:22 to go in the fourth, when Kirienko scored back-to-back buckets that got nine-point run Husky run going. However, the Huskies were unable to fire a comeback, making the final score, 63-45.
