EDINBURG, Texas – The HBU men's soccer team fell behind by two goals and responded with one but couldn't find the equalizer as the Huskies dropped a 2-1 decision to UT Rio Grande Valley on Sunday evening at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
UT Rio Grande Valley (8-4-0, 3-2-0 WAC) put 11 of its 15 shots attempts on target in earning the win while HBU (4-4-3, 2-2-1 WAC) attempted nine shots with two of those on goal. Both teams earned three corner kicks over the course of the game.
In the ninth minute, Isidro Martinez put a shot on goal for UTRGV but
Jorge Cabrera made save number one on the shot in the ninth minute. The Vaqueros put two more shots on target before HBU got its' first shot on goal with a
Devon Grant header at the 26:36 mark. For the half, UTRGV held a 9-to-5 advantage in shots with five of those on goal to just one for the Huskies.
In the second period, Rooby Dalusma got the scoring started less than five minutes in with a goal inside the box thanks to assists by William Akio and Bryce Box. Box then got his own goal less than seven minutes later in the 55
th minute, scoring form the top of the 18-yard box. HBU's Dominick Falleto checked in to the game a minute later and took just five minutes to put the Huskies on the board with a header goal on a cross from
Tim Watson to make it a 2-1 game. In the final 29 minutes, HBU managed just a pair of shots with neither on target.
Faletto's goal was his third of the season, the second-most on the team, while Watson's assist was his first. Box has three goals for the year for UTRGV. In goal, Cabrera came up with nine saves to match his second-highest save total in his career.
The Huskies will play just one game next weekend as they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo. on Saturday, Oct. 13, with a 7:00 p.m. CT start time.
