SAN ANTONIO, Texas – On Friday evening and for the second year in a row, junior
Malik Key scored the lone goal in a 1-0 HBU men's soccer win over Incarnate Word at Benson Stadium.
Both teams traded attempts early on with
Thomas Menke the first player to put a shot on target at the 19:46 mark with UIW (0-9-1, 0-4-0 WAC) coming up with a team save to keep the Huskies (4-3-3, 2-1-1 WAC) off the board. HBU broke through in the 35
th minute when
Darrell Johnson assisted Key on his first goal of the year and what would prove to be the game-winner. Last season, in a non-conference matchup in San Antonio, Key also scored the game-winner in a one-goal match the Huskies won.
The Huskies put three other shots on target in the first half. Incarnate Word forced HBU's
Jorge Cabrera into his first save of the match in the 63
rd minute with a shot by Rob Lemmens. Johnson and
Josue Palomino both put shots on goal but were denied by UIW keeper Jorge Guzman. UIW turned on the pressure over the final three minutes with a pair of corner kicks and another shot on goal by Lemmens.
The goal was the first of the year for Key while Johnson's assist was his first this season. Both players now have three total points. In goal, Cabrera is now 4-3-2 as he recorded shutout number four on the year. The Huskies held UIW to just five total shots while taking 11 attempts. Corners were even with both teams taking five.
HBU will travel to south Texas next for a Sunday, Oct. 7, evening matchup with UT Rio Grande Valley at 7:00 p.m.
