SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The HBU men's soccer team opened Western Athletic Conference play with three-straight home games and now hits a three-game road swing beginning this weekend with a pair of in-state games at Incarnate Word and UT Rio Grande Valley.
The Huskies (3-3-3, 1-1-1 WAC) open the weekend on Friday, Oct. 5, at Benson Stadium for a matchup with Incarnate Word (0-8-1, 0-3-0 WAC) at 7:30 p.m. directly following the HBU women's game against the Cardinals. Then, HBU heads south for a 7:00 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, match at UT Rio Grande Valley (6-4-0, 1-2-0 WAC).
Sophomore
Gianluca Natera continues to pace the HBU offense, leading the team with 13 points (4 goals, 5 assists) after adding a pair of assists in HBU's two games last weekend. His five assists for the year are tied for the most in the WAC. In WAC play, junior
Thomas Menke lead the way with a pair of goals for four points while junior
Dominick Faletto has also totaled four points, scoring one goal and adding two assists. As a team, HBU is even in goals scored vs. goals allowed with 15 with the Huskies averaging two goals per game through three WAC matches.
The Cardinals have yet to find their first win of the year with their one tie coming at home against Central Arkansas. UIW has lost five-straight matches heading into Friday's contest and count just two goals on the season, both of which came in the draw with UCA. Freshman Carlos Mercado has been in goal for all but 18 minutes this season and owns a 2.55 goals against average along with a .582 save percentage. The Huskies are 4-7-0 all-time against the Cardinals, splitting a pair of games last season.
UTRGV hosts UMKC on Friday ahead of Sunday's match. The Vaqueros have lost their last two, both road games last weekend at Utah Valley and No. 8 Air Force, falling 2-1 in both. Those losses snapped a five-game winning streak for UTRGV. The Vaqueros are out-scoring opponents 18-to-13 for the season and are led by juniors Kyle Edwards and William Akio. Edwards has four goals and three assists for 11 points while Akio has 10 points on three goals and four assists with all three of his goals being game-winners. The Huskies hold a 12-4-3 record all-time versus UTRGV.
HBU will remain on the road following the weekend's matches with a single road game at Air Force on Saturday, Oct. 13.
