BEAUMONT, Texas – HBU women's soccer came up short in the first match of the Huskies' season-ending three-game road swing with a 2-0 loss to defending Southland Conference champion Lamar at the LU Soccer Complex on Friday night.

Lamar (10-4-2, 6-1-2 SLC) found the net with the first shot of the game with the Cardinals' Kelso Peskin scoring her seventh goal of the season in the sixth minute. The Cardinals kept the pressure on the Huskies (8-7-1, 6-2-1 SLC) with three corner kicks and four shots in the next 11 minutes before Madison Ledet made it a two-goal game with a goal from 15 yards out at the 16:57 mark. HBU found its footing from there, putting three attempts on goal the rest of the half but Lamar's Sandra Nygard made all three saves.

In the second period, Baylii Bieke and Noor Abukishk both recorded shot attempts but neither made it on goal. Sophomore Avery Cortez had her second shot of the match stopped by Nygard in the 79th minute for the Huskies' last shot of the game.

Lamar held a 19-to-12 advantage in shots with 10 of those on goal to the Huskies' four shots on target. HBU goalkeeper Alanis Guevara finished the game with eight saves while Lamar's Nygard had four.

Lamar gained three points on the Huskies and moved into second place, one point ahead of HBU. McNeese, meanwhile, picked up three points with a win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and is now tied for third with HBU with 19 points.

"We're definitely disappointed with the loss," said head coach Misty Jones. "We got off to a slow start tonight and Lamar came out firing. We chased the game for the next 73 minutes but couldn't find the back of the net. This is the first time we've been shut out in conference. We've taken a few knocks but no doubt that we'll bounce back and be ready for Sunday."

The Huskies have a showdown with McNeese on Sunday, Oct. 21, in Lake Charles, La. with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
