SAN ANTONIO, Texas – HBU women's basketball claims the win against Incarnate Word in Southland Conference women's basketball Wednesday night at McDermott Center.

Shannon Jones scored in double-figures for the Huskies (6-12, 2-6 SLC). Johnson shot 57.1 percent from the field with 16 points, four rebounds and two steals. Calver shot 44.4 percent, drained a three and scored 12 points. Freshman guard
Megan Valdez-Crader scored five points, had five boards, dished out six assists and had two steals.
UIW (3-16, 2-6 SLC) was led by three players in double-digits. Imani Robinson put up 22 points, brought down 12 boards and had five steals. Melina Merritt racked up 11 points, had three assists and three steals. Sydnee Wynn added 10 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
HBU shot 40.9 percent from the floor, 3-of-5 from the 3-point line and 19-of-29 from behind the line. UIW shot 29.4 percent from the floor, 4-of-14 from behind the arc and 12-of-16 from the free-throw line. UIW outscored HBU in the paint 24-20, but HBU out-shot UIW 16-11 off the bench. UIW outrebounded HBU 42-40.
The Huskies we down 7-3 early in the first highlighted by a 3-pointer by Taylor. The Cardinals sent Johnson to the line to spark a nine-point run. The Cardinals responded with a 3-point play to make it even at 12. Valdez-Crader made it a two-point game to end the first quarter.
For the first three minutes of the second quarter, neither team would lead by more than one point, until back-to-back buckets by Collins and Calver. UIW claimed the next three points, making it a tie game at 19. Calver alone responded with the next six points, including a shot from the 3-point range. Carr got in on the action to give the Huskies an eight-point advantage at the end of the half.
The Cardinals got within four points, as the Huskies were silent in the first two and a half minutes of the third quarter. Despite the silence, the Huskies were able to maintain their lead thanks to Johnson's six points. UIW took the lead with a 1:09 left in the third, after a shot from behind the arc, but Valdez-Crader matched her efforts. The Cardinals were sent to the line to take the lead, but again Johnson was able to do the same.
With a tie ball game going into the fourth quarter, the Huskies shot for an 11-4 run to lead 52-45 with 3:50 to go. The Cardinals scored the next 10 out of 15 points to get within three. With four seconds to go, the Cardinals gave their last effort, but Taylor sealed the deal with a shot from the line.
The Huskies remain on the road Saturday, Jan. 27, taking on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. They will return to Sharp Gym to face Stephen F. Austin Wednesday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.
