ABILENE, Texas – Junior guard
Amanda Johnson outscored all players in HBU women's basketball loss against Abilene Christian in Southland conference action Wednesday night at Moody Coliseum.
Johnson shot 50.0 percent from the floor and 5-of-9 form the 3-point range. She was just two points shy of matching her career-high with 30 points. Sophomore guard
Britta Daub scored 10 points, handed out nine assists and had two steals. Sophomore forward
Lauren Calver added 10 points and grabbed five rebounds. Junior center
Kennedy Collins led HBU (4-10, 0-4 SLC) with seven boards, all of which were defensively, while sophomore guard
Shannon Jones contributed eight points and had six rebounds.
Abilene Christian (11-4, 4-0 SLC) was led by Sara Williamson, who shot 46.7 percent with 20 points, seven rebounds, six assists, three blocks and three steals. Breanna Wright put up 19 points, had five rebounds and eight assists, while Sierra Allen scored 15 points and brought down six rebounds. Dominique Golightly added 10 points, five rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
HBU shot 40.3 percent from the field, hit 5-of-15 from behind the arc and 9-of-10 from behind the line. ACU shot 44.1 percent from the floor, went 9-of-24 from the 3-point line and 11-of-12 from the free-throw line. The Huskies outrebounded the Wildcats 45-34 and 17-11 offensively, leading to a 22-10 advantage off second chances.
ACU jumped to a 17-5 lead early in first with all five points scored by Johnson. The Huskies cut the Wildcats lead to six highlighted by buckets from Calver and sophomore guard
Sydney Carr. ACU drained a 3-pointer, but Johnson answered back from behind the arc. ACU led the first quarter 22-16. The Wildcats started off the second quarter with a nine point run, ended by a layup from Daub. Freshman guard
Megan Valdez-Crader and Johnson helped the Huskies with the next eight points. The half ended after, a 4-4 run, 38-33. Johnson accounted for all but 10 of the Huskies' points in the first half with 10 points in the first quarter and 13 points in the second quarter.
The Huskies fell short to a 15-8 run in the third quarter, with four points from Daub. Calver and Johnson both had shots to finish the third, 59-47. The Wildcats extended their lead, after a 15-7 spark early in the fourth quarter. The Huskies scored the next six points with buckets by Jones and Daub. Jones led the Huskies in the fourth with eight points and six boards, scoring six of her points with 1:13 to go.
The Huskies continues SLC action at Sam Houston State on Saturday, Jan. 13, before returning home for Southeastern Louisiana Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. and McNeese Saturday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m.
