BVB: HBU Opens Season With 5-0 Sweep of TAMU-CC

No. 1 team of Jessica Wooten/Aeriel Horton win three-setter.



CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – HBU won all five matches, plus the alternate match, as the Huskies opened the season with a sweep on the road against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in beach volleyball action Tuesday afternoon on the courts at the Dugan Family Track and Soccer Stadium.
 
"It's great to watch two Southland Conference schools open the beach season and see us compete at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as we continue to develop our league," HBU head coach Trent Herman said.
 
The Huskies' top tandem of senior Jessica Wooten and sophomore Aeriel Horton needed three sets to outlast the Islanders' Brittany Gilpin and Madison Greene, 21-15, 14-21, 15-12. In the No. 2 match, HBU senior Kayla Armer and freshman Tori Hinojosa took care of TAMU-CC's Morgan Carlson and Kelsee Felux, 21-13 and 21-12. In the No. 3 match, HBU senior Melissa Fuchs and junior Bailey Banks dropped the first set, but rebounded for win over TAMU-CC's Madison Fitzsimmons and Madison Woods, 20-22, 21-15, 15-11.
 
In the No. 4 match, HBU seniors Tiffany Thomas and Morgan McDaniel topped TAMU-CC's Kristyn Nicholson and Mallory Moran, 21-16 and 21-10. In the No. 5 spot, Huskies freshman Danielle Wheeler and senior Taylor Livoti defeated the Islanders' Claire Karsten and Haley Sobosle, 21-9 and 21-11. In the No. 6 alternate match, HBU sophomore Madison O'Brien and freshman Hannah Lewis downed TAMU-CC's Mackenzie Coates and Morgan Williams, 24-22 and 21-15.
 
"It was exciting to see the ladies showcase their skills today," HBU associate head coach Cameron Sitler said. "We're looking forward to traveling to Gulf Shores, where they host the national championship, and work on aspects we need to improve here in the early stages of the season."
 
The Huskies will compete in the Badger Beach Bash Saturday and Sunday in Gulf Shores, Alabama. HBU face host Spring Hill College Saturday at 10 a.m., followed by Austin Peay at 3 p.m. On Sunday, the Huskies take on Tulane at 10 a.m., followed by Florida Atlantic at 1 p.m.
