THIBODAUX, La. – Friday evening was the start of the Southland Conference schedule for HBU softball with the Huskies dropping an 8-0 decision to Nicholls at the Nicholls Softball Complex.
HBU (7-7, 0-1 SLC) ran into a buzzsaw in the circle in the form of Megan Landry who has already earned a pair of Southland Pitcher of the Week laurels through four weeks. Landry held the Huskies to just two hits, a
Cecilia Bauer double in the second and a single by
Nicole Shedd in the fourth. The only other HBU baserunner came on a Bauer walk in the fifth.
Nicholls (15-9, 1-0 SLC) opened the scoring in the third after a leadoff walk and an HBU error on the fielder's choice. Two batters later, with one out and two on, Brooke Morris singled in the first run of the game. After another single, Amanda Gianelloni followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home run number two. Kasey Frederick brought home a pair of runs with a double and the fifth run of the inning came across on a throwing error after a wild pitch.
The Colonels added a pair of runs in the fourth on three hits for a 7-0 advantage before a one-out home run by Sydney Bourg ended the game in the fifth.
Bauer led the way at the plate for HBU, going 1-for-1 with a double and a walk while Shedd was 1-for-2. Senior
Emily Mueller took the loss in the circle, falling to 3-5 on the season. She allowed seven runs, just two of which were earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts along with two walks.
Landry earned the win for the Colonels, moving to 8-4 on the year and striking out nine while allowing two hits and just one walk. Three Nicholls players enjoyed multi-hit games.
HBU and Nicholls will close out their season series on Saturday, March 11, at 12:00 p.m.
