THIBODAUX, La. – HBU lost a pair of Southland Conference games to the Nicholls Colonels on Saturday at the Nicholls Softball Complex.
The Huskies (7-9, 0-3 SLC) dropped the first game to Nicholls (17-9, 3-0 SLC) by a score of 6-1 and the second game had a 5-1 final score.
In the first game, junior
Libby Brown led the game off with a triple down the left field line but the next three batters flied out, fouled out and lined out to strand Brown at third.
Kassie James put HBU on the board in the top of the second with her first home run as a Husky, putting the Huskies ahead 1-0.
In the Nicholls half of the third, Moriah Stroher singled with two outs and scored as the next batter, Samantha Mracich doubled to tie the game at 1-1. The Colonels picked up a pair of singles followed by a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third with one out. A Sydney Bourg single to left center put the Colonels ahead 2-1.
Nicholls added one more run in the fifth before putting thigs out of reach in the sixth with three more runs.
Demi Janak was 2-for-3 in the game with a double and single while
Kay Schroeder also picked up her first double of the season. James went 1-for-3 in the game with the Huskies' only run scored and RBI thanks to her round-tripper.
Stephanie Buenrostro fell to 3-2 on the season, taking the loss in the circle. The junior allowed six earned runs on 10 hits and one walk over five and a third innings pitched with one strikeout.
In game two, the Huskies were mostly held in check by Nicholls starting pitcher Jackie Johnson, managing just a pair of base hits.
The Colonels took advantage of a pair of HBU errors in the bottom of the first to push across two runs on two hits for an early 2-0 lead. In the HBU half of the third, Brown drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a passed ball and then scored on a fielding error by the Nicholls left fielder to cut the Huskies' deficit to 2-1.
The score remained 2-1 until the sixth inning when a walk and a single put two runners on with one out. The Colonels' Kasey Frederick drove a 3-1 offering over the fence to left center to make it a 5-1 ballgame.
Senior
Emily Mueller threw six innings in the circle for HBU, falling to 3-6 on the year. Mueller allowed five runs, four earned, while striking out one and walking two.
Schroeder and
Heidi Jaquez picked up the Huskies only base hits in the game, both of which were singles.
The Huskies will continue Southland Conference play next weekend with a three-game series against Lamar in Beaumont, Texas. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday, March 17, starting at 4:00 p.m. with a single game scheduled for Saturday, March 18, at 3:00 p.m.
