HOUSTON – HBU opened the Southland Conference season with a resounding 76-65 road win over Sam Houston State and the Huskies have a chance to pick up the season sweep this Thursday when they host the Bearkats at 7:05 p.m. Fans can watch the game on Root Sports with Tom Franklin and Neal Raphael providing play-by-play and commentary and as always, the Legacy Sports Network live broadcast with Lonnie King will be available at HBUHuskies.com.

HBU (11-12, 7-6 SLC) is currently riding a three-game winning streak and has won four of its last five, putting the Huskies into a tie for sixth place in the Southland standings just a half game out of fourth.

The Huskies jumped out to a 44-28 halftime lead on Lamar the last time on the court, holding a double-digit advantage for much of the game before a late surge brought the final score to 94-87. Six different players reached double-digits in scoring in the win and it was the second consecutive outing in which all five starters scored at least 10 points.

For the season, Colter Lasher is averaging 15 points per game to lead the team on 46.2 percent (129-of-279) shooting. Reveal Chukwujekwu and Josh Ibarra have combined for 14 double-doubles on the season, with Chukwujekwu owning eight of those. Both players are averaging more than seven rebounds per game. Braxton Bonds is currently 49th in the nation in steals with an average of 1.91 per contest.

Sam Houston State (18-8, 9-4) is presently in second place in the conference despite having lost two of the last three games. The Bearkats won their most recent outing, defeating Incarnate Word at home, 72-63. The SHSU bench contributed 51 of the team's 72 points in the win, led by sophomore Josh Delaney with 14.

The Bearkats are led by senior Dakarai Henderson who is averaging 11 points per game while fellow senior Aurimas Majauskas is adding 10.2. On the boards, Torry Butler is pulling down 6.7 rebounds per game for the best average on the team.

In the first meeting between the two teams earlier this season, the Huskies went into the half trailing by four but blitzed the Bearkats 53-35 in the second half. Lasher finished with 22 points while Chukwujekwu posted a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds while Bonds added 13 points.

Thursday evening's game is being presented by Houston Federal Credit Union.

HBU will step out of conference play for their next game when the Huskies host Randall to Sharp Gym on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 7:00 p.m.
