NEW ORLEANS – HBU women's basketball fell to New Orleans in Southland Conference women's basketball Saturday afternoon at Lakefront Arena.
Sophomore forward
Lauren Calver shot 60.0 percent from the field for a career high 19 points, brought down five rebounds, and handed out three assists to lead the Huskies (4-8, 0-2). Sophomore guard
Sydney Carr shot 50 percent from the floor, contributing 11 points and led with six rebounds, while junior guard
Amanda Johnson added 10 points, four rebounds and two assists. Junior center
Natalia Gwarda handed out four assists and had four blocks.
Randi Brown led New Orleans (5-8, 1-1) with 25 points, had seven steals, five assists and four rebounds. Kayla Mundy posted 18 points, five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals, while Shania Woods racked up 13 points and 17 rebounds.
HBU shot 46.2 percent from the field, went 1-of-7 from the 3-point range and 60.0 percent from the free-throw line. New Orleans shot 35.9 percent from the floor, 3-of-19 from behind the arc and 64.7 percent behind the line. New Orleans outrebounded HBU 44-38 and out-shot HBU in the paint 38-36.
The Privateer led by as many as 11 points at the end of the first quarter. Calver, Gwarda and sophomore guard
Sophie Taylor were responsible for the Huskies' points. Calver scored six of HBU's 10 points. The Huskies started the second quarter with an 8-0 run, including buckets from Gwarda, Carr, Calver and Johnson. After New Orleans ended the streak with two, Calver answered back with a layup to bring the Huskies within five points of New Orleans going into the half, 26-21.
Early in the third quarter, a jumper by Taylor started an eight-point streak by New Orleans, but Taylor and Carr came back with the next six points. For the next 11 points, HBU and New Orleans went back-and-forth with shots made by Johnson, Gwarda and Carr, until New Orleans ended the third quarter with a 3-point play. New Orleans started the fourth quarter with a 12 point run, 60-37.
Lauren Calver ended the run with back-to-back layups. Calver reported nine points with two assists, while Johnson contributed six points and Carr two points.
The Huskies will return home after a seven-day break to face Nicholls on Saturday, Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. in Sharp Gym. They will then travel to Abilene Christian on Wednesday, Jan. 10 for a 2 p.m. game and remain on the road against Sam Houston State on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 3 p.m.
