NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A pair of freshmen set new career-highs but it wasn't enough as the HBU men's basketball team dropped an 81-48 decision to Vanderbilt at Memorial Gym on Wednesday evening.
It took the HBU (4-9) offense nearly four and a half minutes to find its first field goal with
David Caraher knocking down a second-chance jumper in the paint and getting the Huskies within four. HBU held Vanderbilt (4-7) scoreless for four minutes and thirty-five second and was able to tie things up, 8-8 with 13:34 left in the half.
The Commodores scored the next six points and led 15-10 at the third media timeout with 7:20 to go in the first period. Vanderbilt then went on a 19-7 run to close out the half and take a 34-17 lead into the half.
Vanderbilt opened the second half with a 17-4 run to go up by 30 but the Huskies were able to get the deficit back under 30 a few times but VU managed to push its lead as high as 37.
DuBose, a freshman, led all players with a career-high 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting and added four rebounds. McKenzie set a new career-best on the boards, pulling down a team-high nine rebounds to go along with five points. As a team, the Huskies shot just 26.2 percent from the floor.
Vanderbilt was led by Matthew Fisher-Davis with 19 points with three other players reaching double-digits in scoring. Jeff Roberson ended the night with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. The Commodores out-rebounded HBU by a 45-38 margin.
With the non-conference portion of their schedule complete, the Huskies will dive into Southland Conference play with a pair of games before the new year. HBU will first visit Lamar in Beaumont, Texas on Thursday, Dec. 28, at 7:00 p.m. before returning to Sharp Gym to square off with defending SLC champion New Orleans on Dec. 30.
