HOUSTON – In the 2017 regular season finale, the HBU women's soccer team played to a 0-0 Southland Conference draw with visiting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday evening at Sorrels Field.

With the draw, the Huskies (7-6-3, 6-3-2 SLC) finish with 20 points and fifth place in the SLC standings and will take on Central Arkansas in the first round of the SLC Tournament which starts on Wednesday, Nov. 1 in Corpus Christi. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (6-8-3, 3-6-2 SLC) earned a spot in the tournament thanks to the point earned with the draw, taking the eighth seed and facing Lamar in the first round.

Brooke Erdmann Put an early shot on goal in the sixth minute with a shot from outside the 18 yard box that fell into Alanis Guevara's arms for her first save of the night. AMCC put three more shots on goal but Guevara came up with saves on all three. Meanwhile, HBU's only shot on target came in the 36th minute when Ellee Hall flicked a header on goal off a Jennifer Gebhardt free kick, but Kyleigh Hall was able to snag the shot and keep the clean sheet for the first half. Hall denied a pair of HBU opportunities, coming out of the goal to deny Autumn Wildung making dangerous runs.

In the second half, senior Katie Turner took Guevara's place in goal, making three saves in the period. She was tested just over five minutes in by an Erdmann shot, once of four on goal for the AMCC senior. Kayla Gove put a shot on goal at the 71:08 mark and a minute later HBU's Hall put another header on target. One of HBU's most dangerous chances came with just 27 seconds left on the clock in regulation when Wildung got behind the defense on a through ball and AMCC's Hall made the one-on-one stop to send things to overtime.

It took just 17 seconds into the first overtime for Erdmann to put a shot on goal and the Huskies' Jennifer Gebhardt put a free kick on line from 35 yards out but Hall was able to get in position and make the stop near the left post. Freshman Emily Harves was responsible for a pair of shots on goal in the final overtime with a pair.

HBU's Hall finished the night with four shots on goal in five shots while Harves had a pair of shots on goal and six for the night. In goal, Guevara made four saves in her 45 minutes with Turner also stopping four in 65 minutes, finishing as the goalie on record and finishing the regular season with a record of 1-0-1. The Huskies out-shot the Islanders 24-15 with both teams recording eight shots on goal. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

"The girls fought hard tonight," said head coach Misty Jones. "We certainly did not execute like we should have. We had a couple of chances to put the game away early and we didn't do that, therefore it made for a long game. That's alright, though. Most importantly, we're going to Corpus Christi and we are ready to perform at the conference tournament. It's always an honor to be able to defend your title and we are ready for the challenge."

The Southland Conference tournament kicks off on Nov. 1. If the Huskies beat Central Arkansas in the opening round they will face the winner of Lamar and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the semifinals.
