HOUSTON – Junior outside hitter
Bailey Banks recorded 17 kills and 17 digs in the Huskies' 3-1 (25-20, 25-22, 18-25, 25-20) defeat of North Florida, along with 16 kills and 15 digs in a 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-23) sweep Pennsylvania during the opening day of the Barcelona Labor Day Classic.
The Huskies first faced North Florida, where senior middle blocker
Ashlee Vann slammed 14 kills and tacked on seven block assists. Senior setter
Kayla Armer recorded a double-double with 44 assists and 10 digs to help with the Huskies' victory. Junior middle blocker
Blair Gillard added six block assists.
Gabby O'Connell led North Florida with a hitting percentage of .314 with 15 kills. Carina Hoff recorded 11 kills, while Morgan Van Alstine had 10 kills and seven block assists. Madilyn McCarty led North Florida with 24 assists and 11 digs, followed by Carinne Turner with 17 assists. Ashley Laborde tacked on 20 digs for North Florida.
HBU outhit North Florida 52-48, with a total percentage of .222. The Huskies outdug North Florida 56-53 and led the match by four blocks.
HBU later battled against Penn during their second match-up of the tournament. Senior outside hitter
Melissa Fuchs recorded nine kills and eight digs to help HBU with their victory. Vann had seven kills and four block assists. Armer led the Huskies with 39 assists. Junior defensive specialist
Hailey Erickson recorded 11 digs. Gillard led HBU with seven block assists.
Courtney Quinn led Pennsylvania with 15 kills, while Hayley Molnar helped with 10 kills. Sydney Morton recorded 14 assists, along with Grace James with 13 assists. Michelle Pereira led Penn with 23 total digs.
The Huskies recorded a total hitting percentage of .259 with 44 kills versus Penn's 37. HBU outdug Pennsylvania 56-49. The Huskies also led the match with 11 blocks.
HBU will face two more opponents on Saturday as they continue their battle in the Barcelona Labor Day Classic in Sharp Gym. HBU will play Northern Colorado at noon, followed by Toledo at 7 p.m.
