ABILENE, Texas – The HBU softball team fell, 9-3, as Abilene Christian completed the Southland Conference series sweep on Saturday afternoon in the 2016 season finale for both teams at Poly Wells Field.
The Huskies finish the season with a 15-29 overall record, posting a 7-19 mark in SLC play.
Sophomore left fielder
Nicole Shedd led HBU at the plate for the second straight game against the Wildcats (26-21, 19-8 SLC). The native of Universal City, Texas, finished 3-for-4 with a double, home run, RBI and run scored.
In total, five players recorded multi-hit games. Shedd was joined by Huskies
Libby Brown (2-for-3),
Savana Guidry (2-for-4) and
Demi Janak (2-for-3), all recording two hits and one double, respectfully. Senior third baseman
Shay Orsak finished 2-for-3.
Senior
Laci Belovsky (8-18) took the loss, surrendering eight runs on nine hits across four and one-third innings pitched. Senior
Shannon O'Connor was taxed for one run and four hits and in one and two-third innings of relief.
ACU's Casey-May Huff (5-0) earned the win, scattering two runs and seven hits across four innings, before giving way to Hannah Null, who tossed the final three innings, giving up one run, in recording her third save of the season.
The Wildcats plated one run in each of their first three trips to the plate, with HBU turning a triple play to end the bottom of the first.
Shedd got the Huskies on the board in the top of the fourth, leading off the inning with a solo shot to center field.
HBU added another run in the top of the fifth to pull within one run, 3-2. Guidry and Orsak both singled, before Brown and Janak executed a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly to bring one home.
However, ACU scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth and added one run in the sixth to take a commanding 9-3 lead.
The Huskies got doubles from both Guidry and Janak in the seventh to plate one run for the 9-3 final.
The loss marks the final HBU game for seniors Belovsky,
Caitlin Gunn, O'Connor, Orsak and
Erica Reyes.
