HOUSTON – The HBU beach volleyball team picked up their fifth win of the season in a 4-1 victory over New Orleans to open the inaugural HBU Beach Invitational at Third Coast Volleyball on Friday afternoon.
"It was great to give our team another chance to compete at home," head coach
Trent Herman said. "We have continued to make strides in developing our beach game, especially as a first-year program. We look forward to building on this tomorrow, with matches against Lee College and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi."
The Huskies (5-8) showed balanced play in all five matches against the Privateers (3-14). HBU rattled off four straight wins to secure the win, before UNO rallied in final match to avoid the sweep.
The tandem of
Haley Durham and
Kayla Armer opened the match with a 22-20, 21-15 triumph in the No. 4 pairing, as
Jessica Wooten and
Aeriel Horton (21-9, 21-8), and
Bailey Banks and
Melissa Fuchs (22-20, 21-14) picked up straight-set victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 matchups, respectfully.
Huskies
Guinevere Meyer and
Ashlee Vann came from behind to claim the No. 5 pairing in three sets, 13-21, 21-16, 15-6.
Madison O'Brien and
Hailey Erickson played a heavily contested No. 3 bout to close the match, 20-22, 21-16, 12-15.
HBU will close its host tournament with two matches on Saturday. The Huskies will face Lee College in a 9 a.m. first serve, before seeing Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 1:30 p.m.
