HOUSTON – The HBU beach volleyball team opened their inaugural season 2-0 with a sweep of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, by scores of 3-2 and 5-0, on Thursday afternoon at Third Coast Volleyball Club.
In the first game, HBU (2-0) won the first two matches with duos
Haley Durham and
Guinevere Meyer, and
Jessica Wooten and
Aeriel Horton winning in straight sets. However, the Islanders (0-2) were victorious in the next two matches, setting the stage for the tiebreaker in final match. The tandem of
Ashlee Vann and
Melissa Fuchs won by identical 21-14 scores as HBU won the first match, 3-2.
HBU took control in the second match, winning four of the five games in straight sets. Durham and Meyer rallied nicely from a 1-0 hole to take the next two sets by scores of 21-15 and 15-13.
HBU will compete in the TCU Fight at the Fort from March 19-20 against the host Horned Frogs, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and Florida State.

Overview of match…
"It was really nice to have the opportunity to start our season at home. The cross-over players have only been going for about two weeks since we wrapped the indoor season. To put them through a crash-course and be able to get these results this early, speaks a lot to our coaches and these players. Our players have bought in to this transition.
"It was also nice to start against an opponent in Texas A&M-Corpus Christi that is also kicking off their inaugural season. Now we hit the road for a tournament in Fort Worth, where we play a top-five team in Florida State, an up-and-coming team in host TCU and will see (TAMU-CC) again."
