HOUSTON – A new era at HBU begins Thursday when the inaugural beach volleyball team hits the sand against fellow newcomer Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 1 p.m. from Third Coast Volleyball Club.
Admission to the match is free of charge. Third Coast Volleyball Club is located at 5652 Forney Drive, between Harwin Drive and the Hardy Toll Road. HBU sunglasses will be given to all in attendance while supplies last.
HBU is one of 49 teams in the nation to offer beach volleyball. Beach coach
Cameron Sitler's team features three players signed in the offseason – graduate student
Haley Durham and freshmen
Aeriel Horton and
Guinevere Meyer. The Huskies' roster showcases nine players from the indoor team.
Thursday also marks Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's inaugural match. Led by first year head coach Steve Greene, the Islanders feature 11 players all from their indoor squad.
Played in the Summer Olympics, beach volleyball features two players per team in a best-of-three match. The first duo to 21 points wins the set. If there is a decisive set three, it is the first duo to 15 points. The teams switch ends throughout the sets so each combat with sun and wind evenly. The match is a best-of-five, so a team needs at least three wins to be victorious.
After Thursday's match with the Islanders, HBU plays at the Fight at the Fort, hosted by TCU, from March 19-20. The Huskies will face the host Horned Frogs, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and No. 4 Florida State.
