HOUSTON – Head coach
Ron Cottrell and the men's basketball program mourn the loss Eddie Brown, who passed away on Saturday afternoon at the age of 65.
"I can't begin to express the sadness I feel, and our entire team feels, at learning of the passing of our dear friend and fellow Husky Eddie Brown," Cottrell said. "We lost a true legend and ambassador for HBU and our basketball program. Eddie was very involved in our program and a mentor to many of our young men over the years. We will miss him greatly. Heaven is enjoying a great exhibition of basketball talent and a person of true friendship tonight."
Brown, a 6-5 wing out of Madison, Mississippi, was a four-year letterman for the Huskies from 1968-1972 and is the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,939 points. He was also a proud graduate of HBU, earning his degree in four years and an U.S. Army veteran.
Playing under head coaches Gerald Myers and Lonnie Richards, Brown averaged 18.8 points per game for his career, a mark that still ranks sixth all-time in school history. He is one of just seven Huskies ever to score over 40 points in a game, netting 41 at Bishop College in the 1968-69 season. Brown also recorded five 30-plus point performances.
Across the 1968-69 season, Brown averaged 20.8 points per contest, the first of 10 players in HBU history to ever average 20 points or more. In that season, he also set the school record with 20 free made throws as part of a 38-point game against Sam Houston State.
As a freshman out of Rosa A. Scott High School, Brown scored 582 total points, which still sits 11th at HBU on the all-time single-season charts.
Brown was inducted into HBU Hall of Honor in 2000, was a part of the Tip-Off Club Committee and was longtime front-row mainstay at home basketball games in Sharp Gym. Last season, he was honored as part of the 1970s All-Decade Team.
