NACOGDOCHES, Texas – After taking down preseason Southland favorite Sam Houston State in Huntsville on Thursday night, HBU will face its next test on the road against Stephen F. Austin, which has won the SLC tournament and advanced to the NCAA tournament each of the last three season, at the Johnson Coliseum on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. As always, fans can listen to the game live via the Legacy Sports Network audio broadcast with Lonnie King, available at HBUHuskies.com, and a live stream will also be available on ESPN3.
In their 79-65 conference-opening win against the Bearkats, the Huskies (5-6, 1-0 SLC) dominated the second half en route to the program's first win at Sam Houston State since the 1978-79 season. HBU trailed 30-26 at the half after committing 18 turnovers in the first period. In the second half, the Huskies knocked down 6-9 from deep, 23-30 at the charity stripe, and shot above 50 percent from the floor to run away from Sam Houston State. HBU held a 38-22 advantage on the boards for the game and took advantage with 16 second chance points.
Senior
Colter Lasher led the scoring with 22 points on 7-11 shooting, including 4-6 from three. He is now at 99 made three-pointers for his career and sits just 48 points shy of 1,000 for his career.
Reveal Chukwujekwu posted his second double-double in the last three games, adding 16 points on 5-7 shooting and grabbing 10 rebounds. As team, HBU shot above 50 percent from three-point range for the first time this season, connecting on 8-15 from beyond the arc.
The Lumberjacks (5-7, 0-0 SLC) most recently took part in the Diamondhead Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii, posting a 1-2 record in the tournament with a win over Southern Miss and losses to Tulsa and Utah. Their most recent game was a 74-66 loss to Utah. Leon Gilmore III and Ty Charles led SFA off the bench with 13 and 11 points, respectively. SFA shot well in the loss, hitting 48.3 percent from the floor and 50 percent from three, but were hurt by 23 turnovers.
On the season, SFA is averaging over 19 turnovers per game and has an assist-to-turnover ratio of 0.6. Junior college transfer Ivan Canete leads the Lumberjacks with 12.8 points per game and is shooting above 45 percent from beyond the arc. Sophomore forward T.J. Holyfield is adding 12.2 points and leads the way with 6.7 rebounds per game. The Lumberjacks currently sport a 4-1 record at home with their 31-game home winning streak snapped in a loss to UAB on December 7. As a team, SFA is averaging 70.2 points per game.
HBU returns home to Sharp Gym and will ring in the new year with a three-game homestand that begins January 5 when the Huskies host the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana at 7:00 p.m.
