WSOC: HBU Advances to Final With 2-0 Victory Over UCA

Ellee Hall scores fifth goal in a conference tournament in her career.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Fourth-seeded HBU advanced to the final of the Southland Conference Women's Soccer Tournament with a 2-0 victory and snapped the top-seeded Central Arkansas' six-game winning streak in the semifinals Friday night at Jack Dugan Stadium.

"Let's give Central Arkansas credit, they are a good team," head coach Misty Jones commented. "However, we stuck to our game plan and put in a solid 90 minutes. Players played with heart and came to win. The entire back line has been solid the whole tournament. Liz (Adams) had a big game with one-on-one defending. Alanis (Guevara) had a big save at the end that saved the shutout. Our offensive line has been very effective. Ellee (Hall) and Sabriah (Spencer) had some clutch goals and major impact in both games. Allison (Abendschein) has been dominate in the midfield and in the air. We are looking forward to a rematch of the 2014 championship."

The Huskies (9-10-1) were not intimidated by top-seeded Central Arkansas (15-4-1) as they began the game with offense in mind. In the sixth minute, junior midfielder Ellee Hall hit a first time shot with her right foot. The net was open from the previous play, but Hall was pressured by a charging defender which made her take the shot as soon as she could. She was inches away from taking the lead, but the ball missed the left post. Ten minutes later, Hall received a ball from junior defender Jennifer Gebhardt and turned to beat the player marking her. Hall then dribbled past another Bear and made another defender flying past her as she cut to her left, burying the ball to the right of the goalkeeper, who watched it go by.

The second half wasn't much different for the Huskies. Two minutes into the half, a corner was awarded to HBU. Senior forward Alessia Dal Monte lined up to take the kick and placed it perfectly to senior midfielder Allison Abendschein's head. She directed the ball to the goal but it struck the left post. In the 55th minute, sophomore defender Baylii Bieke threw the ball to sophomore forward Sabriah Spencer's feet. Spencer then turned to face the goal and shot the ball far post. The diving keeper got a slight touch to the ball, but not enough to keep the Huskies from getting a 2-0 lead.

HBU was awarded a free kick after a fould in the 78th minute right outside of UCA's 18 yard box, which Hall had the initiative to take. As everyone was looking for the ball to be either shot or placed in the air, she had another idea. She passed the ball to Abendschein who was running onto it. She struck it first time, but the ball missed the goal to the right, resulting in a Bear goal kick. With one minute left in regulation, UCA had a dangerous attack which made sophomore goalkeeper Alanis Guevara make a diving stop. As she dove, she tipped the ball to the goal post but was able to secure it before a Bear forward was able to get to it.

Abendschein led the Huskies with two shots on goal and was helped out by teammates Hall, Spencer, and sophomore forward Gabby Rodriguez to round out the total of five shots on goal for the Huskies. Guevara was asked to make four saves to advance the team to the finals.

The Bears had Karly Kliever, Alex Moore, Camille Bassett, and Jordan Slim with each one shot on goal. The time in goal was split evenly by Lauren Mercuri with one save in the first half and Anna Hughes with two saves in the second half. Both keepers had one goal against them.

The Huskies beat the Bears in every crucial stat, including total shots 17-10, 6-3 in corner kicks, and 4-3 in saves.

A repeat of the 2014 tournament championship, which HBU won 2-0, will happen as the fourth-seeded Huskies take on the second-seeded Stephen F. Austin in the championship match on Sunday, which will be broadcast on ESPN3 at 1:05 p.m. at Dugan Soccer Stadium.
