ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The HBU men's basketball team will look to bounce back for their first win of the 2016-17 campaign against New Mexico on Monday with tip-off set for 8:00 p.m. The game will be televised on the Root Sports Network with Drew Goodman providing the play-by-play call and Dave Bollwinkel as the color commentator. HBU (0-1) dropped its opener to Texas Tech on Friday in Lubbock, Texas by a score of 93-67. Senior graduate transfer
Atif Russell led the way with 16 points on 6-12 shooting in his HBU debut. Junior
Josh Ibarra ended the night with nine points and tied for the team lead in rebounds with five while freshman
Jalon Gates ended his collegiate debut with nine points off the bench. Senior
Colter Lasher led HBU with three assists to go along with eight points and five boards.
New Mexico (1-0) are coming off a season-opening home victory over Idaho State on Friday. The Lobos trailed by six at the half but outscored the Bengals 49-32 in the second half en route to an 81-70 final. UNM was led by senior forward Tim Williams who posted a double-double (18 points, 11 rebounds) and junior forward Sam Logwood who netted a team-high 20 points. New Mexico struggled from three, connecting on just 19 percent from behind the arc, but made up for it by score more than half their points in the paint.
This meeting marks the third meeting between the two programs. The most recent meeting was January 3, 2012 in Albuquerque with the Huskies falling 98-61.
After Monday's game, HBU will return to Sharp Gym for its home opener against Dallas Christian on Friday, November 18 at 7:00 p.m.
