Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

WSOC: HBU Run Ends at No. 1 Stanford, 4-0

Katie Turner made seven saves in the second half.

STANFORD, California - HBU soccer ended its season after losing to No. 1 Stanford 4-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Friday night at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.

"I'm very proud of the girls," head coach Misty Jones. "They fought from beginning to end and they were not intimidated. We made Stanford earn the win. It was a great season and we had a fantastic senior class. They won two championships and made two NCAA appearances. I look forward to a tough off season and a repeat next year."

The Huskies (10-11-1) started defending as the Cardinal (18-1-1) started with the ball at kick off. Three minutes into the game, the Huskies made a header clearance to keep the ball out of danger. One minute later, Stanford had a chance at the top of the box, but sophomore defender Baylii Bieke closed down the space quickly and made the shooter miss high. In the sixth minute, Stanford found the back of the net. A cross on the ground from the left side of the field off of the foot of Michelle Xiao to Kyra Carusa who struck it first time to the near post. Sophomore goalkeeper Alanis Guevara had a point blank save one minute later from an attempt of a short corner.

A great defensive play by senior defender Elizabeth Adams as she slid to block a cross in the 15th minute. A few minutes later, senior defender Kristi O'Brien applied pressure to a Cardinal looking to cross the ball into the box, but as she got past O'Brien, junior defender Casey Basso got in the way and blocked the ball from going into the box. In the 17th minute of the match, a cross came from the left into the box, a Cardinal headed it near post where Sam Tran forced the ball to pop up, Guevara was battling a Cardinal in the air, but the ball bounced and the ref raised his flag to signal the ball crossed the line before Guevara could retrieve it to make the score 2-0. Eight minutes later, Michelle Xiao picked the ball off of a Husky defender, took a touch the right and buried it in the back of the net. Guevara came out on two separate occasions in the air as she stopped a couple of crosses from making it to the far post.

In the 54th minute of the match, Stanford picked the ball off and proceeded with a counter attack. The Cardinal traveled on the left side of the field and delivered a ball on the ground to her teammate at the top of the box. The attacker struck the ball, but O'Brien blocked it to save the shot on goal. Five minutes later, junior goalkeeper Katie Turner faced a shot from her six yard box and front smothered it for her first save on the half. The Huskies built up a few combinations throughout the half, but could not find the final pass to produce a big threat. Eighteen minutes left in regulation, Turner punched the ball out of danger from a Cardinal cross. A few minutes later, the Huskies were on the move to goal as senior defender Elizabeth Adams served a cross and forced a Cardinal to head it towards her own goal. The ball hit the top netting and it resulted in a Husky corner.

Turner was asked to make two saves in a one minute period as she tipped the ball and it hit the cross bar, then a Cardinal hit the ball eight yards out and she made a great near post save. In the 83rd minute of the match, Logan Karam made a wall pass with Ceci Gee at the top of the box and struck the ball towards the goal. An unfortunate deflection from a Husky defender put the ball just out of reach of Turner who performed an extension dive and the ball just missed her top hand resulting in the final Cardinal goal.

The Huskies started with Guevara guarding the net for the first 45 minutes as she had two saves with three goals against. The final 45 minutes the Huskies switched to Turner. She had seven saves with one goal against her.

Stanford was led by Beattie Goad and Gee who both had three shots on goal. As a team, they had 29 shots with 13 of them on frame. Jane Campbell took home the shutout win with making zero saves.

This was the final match for seniors defender Kristi O'Brien, defender Elizabeth Adams, defender Jia LeBlanc, forward Alessia Dal Monte, forward Morgan Dean, and midfielder Allison Abendschein.
