MBB: HBU Visits Northwestern State to Open SLC Play

Huskies enters third season as a member of the Southland Conference.

NATCHITOCHES, La. – The HBU men's basketball team will open the 2016 calendar year and Southland Conference play, visiting Northwestern State in a 3 p.m. tip on Saturday inside Prather Coliseum. The Legacy Sports Network with Lonnie King will carry the audio broadcast on HBUHuskies.com.
 
HBU (5-7) is coming off a 101-47 win over Ecclesia on Tuesday, Dec. 29. Sophomore Josh Ibarra paced the Huskies with 10 points and a career-high 15 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Senior Anthony Odunsi recorded a game-high 19 points, as HBU eclipsed 100 points for a third time on the season. Freshman Isaiah Robinson finished with eight points and seven blocks. Robinson's seven denials is the third highest single-game total in program history and most for the Huskies since 2003.
 
On the season, Ibarra ranks third in the SLC in both field goal percentage (.589) and blocks (1.6 per game), while Odunsi sits seventh in free throw percentage (.838) and 10th in assists (3.6 per game).
 
Two players providing early returns in their freshman seasons are Robinson and Asa Cantwell. Both stack up well against other players in the SLC and lead all freshman in their respective categories. Robinson ranks second in the league in blocks (2.3 per game), tied for 16th in the country among freshman, while Cantwell is ninth in the SLC in 3-point field goal percentage (.409) and leads HBU with 18 hits from distance.
 
The Demons are off to a 3-7 start under head coach Mike McConathy with wins over Louisiana College (86-80), Missouri Valley (105-79) and Centenary (92-69). Junior Zeek Woodley leads the SLC and ranks 10th in the country, averaging 23.3 points per game. NSU ranks third in the county with a 78.3 free throw percentage.
 
Following Saturday's tilt, the Huskies will play the conference home opener on Tuesday, hosting McNeese State in a 7 p.m. tip inside Sharp Gym.
