Live StreamCONWAY, Ark. – The HBU volleyball team will play their Southland Conference road-opener on Tuesday, heading to Central Arkansas for a 7 p.m. match inside Prince Center.
The Huskies (8-8, 1-1 SLC) are coming off a 1-1 week at home to start league play. HBU defeated New Orleans, 3-1, on September 24, before dropping a 3-1 decision to Southeastern Louisiana on September 26.
On the season, junior outside hitter
Jessica Wooten leads the Huskies and ranks seventh in the conference with 3.12 kills per set. The native of Humble, Texas, also leads the team with 3.02 digs per set.
Junior setter
Kayla Armer continues to be a steady presence for the offense with 9.40 assists per set, ranking fourth in the SLC, while senior middle blocker
Allison Doerpinghaus ranks eighth with a .310 hitting percentage.
Defensively, sophomore middle blocker
Blair Gillard leads the team and ranks third in the conference with 1.03 blocks per set.
Collectively, HBU ranks third in the SLC in blocks (2.18 per set) and hitting percentage (.212), fourth in opponent hitting percentage (.188) and fifth in assists (11.07 per set).
UCA (6-9, 2-1 SLC) enters its sixth contest of an eight-match homestand, riding a four-match win streak into Tuesday. The Sugar Bears fell 3-1 to Texas A&M – Corpus Christi on September 17 to open conference play and their host tournament – Crain Automotive Invitational – and have since followed with victories over Louisiana Tech (3-0), Alabama State (3-1), Abilene Christian (3-1) and Incarnate Word (3-0).
UCA's senior Heather Schnars is the reigning SLC Offensive Player of the Week, hitting .364 with 22 kills against ACU and .483 with 19 kills against UIW. On the season, Schnars leads the league with an average of 3.98 kills per set and 0.75 aces per set, while sophomore Megan Nash ranks second with 1.28 blocks per set and seventh with a .315 clip. Senior setter Amy South ranks fifth with 9.00 assists per set.
The Sugar Bears rank second in the SLC in blocks (2.22 per set) and service aces (1.68 per set), and fifth in hitting percentage (.193).
Following Tuesday's match, the Huskies will return home to host TAMUCC on Saturday at 1 p.m. for Homecoming.
